A study of ferrous betainate, DYNAVI, on the treatment of anemia in pregnancy and postpartum with oral supplementation


Abstract
During pregnancy, iron is required for the developing fetus, placenta and increasing maternal erythrocyte mass in addition to the normal daily requirements. Aim of this study is that the effectiveness of oral supplementary administration of ferrous iron, DYNAVI, in 15 patients suffering from anemia in pregnancy and in 15 patients in postpartum.
The results are
1) among the patients in iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy, the supplementary administration of ferrous betainate, DYNAVI, is highly effective and well tolerated,
2) the response of hematologic change showed more favorable response in late pregnancy than in mid pregnancy.
3) the change of hemoglobin and red blood cell mass is inversely proportional to the severity of the anemia before administration of iron and
4) the patients administered ferrous betainate, DYNAVI, have not complained any gastrointestinal troubles and difficulties during the course of treatment.
On the basis of above results, it is concluded that routine oral supplementary administration of iron should be recommended during pregnancy, especially, in mid and late pregnancy.
